Fire Walker Troubleshooting

When I click on "Wait" an error message appears

The problem is probably due to the fact that either:
  • You do no have TCP/IP installed on your computer (See Installing TCP/IP below) or
  • Your computer does not have an IP Address (See Assigning an IP Address below).

I cannot see a client that is waiting as an online user

You must make sure the "domain" in the connections->settings menu is set the same on the client as on the controlling PC.

I am unable to connect to the other computer

See the connection troubleshooter

Installing TCP/IP

To Install TCP/IP under Windows 95 (other versions already have this ready) Right click on Network Neighborhood and select "Properties"
  • Check in the list of network components for TCPIP->NameOfNetworkCardHere.
  • If you do not have TCPIP listed then click on "Add"
  • Select "Protocol" and Click on "Add"
  • Select "Microsoft" from Manufacturers
  • Select "TCP/IP" from Network Protocols and Press "Ok"
  • Process with the install and restart the computer when asked

Assigning an IP Address

You may also need to give your computer an IP Address. To do so:
  • Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties
  • Click on TCPIP and click "Properties"
  • Make sure "Specify an IP Address" has a dot in it
  • Make sure IP Address you have something like 192.168.0.50 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. The "50" is a unique number on your network so it shouldnt be the same as any other computer.

Now that you have had a very brief introduction to setting up a TCPIP network there are a few considerations. If you have windows NT/2000 the above explanation may not work. If you are using DHCP then you shouldnt need to specify an IP Address. If you have no idea what I am talking about the perhaps you should talk to a network technician or read up on networking in a good manual.

In general you will find that if you can connect to the Internet Ok or your intranet uses TCP/IP then Fire Walker will work fine for you.
